Association of Teachers of Mathematics in Maine (ATOMIM)

I was at a meeting today where the following book was discussed.  It looks like a well done text on mathematics and pedagogy.  ATOMIM is doing an online book study, it began last week, but I was told today others could join.  If we have a couple members from the AOS interested, let me know and I will purchase an institutional membership

Five Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions by Margaret S. Smith and Mary K. Stein is the selection for the second annual online book study

Participants in the book study will:

  • · Engage in a statewide, unique professional development experience
  • · Expand their knowledge of Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice and the related changes needed in our instructional practices with a focus on orchestrating productive mathematics discussions.
  • · Participate in online discussions using the ATOMIM website forum
  • · Have the opportunity to attend a Leaders Pre-Conference on April 3, 2014, the evening before the Spring Conference on April 4
  • · Receive a certificate of participation

Who should participate?

  • · Classroom teachers
  • · Teacher leaders
  • · Math coaches
  • · School Administrators
  • · Curriculum Coordinators

Expectations of participants:

  • · Complete the week’s reading
  • · Respond thoughtfully to questions posted in the forum
  • · Engage in productive online discussion
